That sounds just about right for the amp if it's being pushed with a decent amount of power... 4-6 watts with good upwards mod. It should be a very reliable and good sounding amplifier for years. The only thing you'll want to change at some point in time would be the capacitors in the power supply. After this many years they'll be starting to dry out and now days you can get much higher quality and sized caps in a package that's less than half the size of the originals. It will work even better then and sound cleaner as well.

Hi Tommy,
It should not be putting out that much power on just one tube. That's actually high for both tubes running, but if one of them is not lighting at all then yes....the unit will work with just one tube but at a much lower power output. You can find replacement tubes on eBay quite easily.

Does yours have the AC cord on it or a heavy black and red wire coming from the rear of the unit? The base unit won't have the red and black wires.....and yes.....they are light green in color.

Howie,
Here's a poor photo of the Lafayette on my CB radio bench.
The 2nd and third photos are of better quality, but I didn't have the Comstat when I took them. My Drake and the Henrys is at my downstairs bench directly below this one, but I don't use it that much.... I have more fun on AM!

Subject: [Tube Type CB Radio Collectors] Want To Buy an old vacuum tube Lafayyette CB - 60's 70's era.

Hello Randy et al,
Thank you for your comments - I AM currently looking for a tube type Lafayette CB TRANSCEIVER - The Comstat 25A you mention rings a bell. If you look at the Lafayette CB's of the 60's/70's era they ARE similar to the HA-410/460 10 and 6 meter Ham AM rigs. They used a 2E26 for a final if I remember correctly. Also, the chassis, case and front panel configuration seem to be the same. Anyway is there a venue, aside from that "online auction site" where I can find a vacuum tube transceiver? Lafayette or otherwise? Manufacturer is not important, but I mention the Lafayette brand as it was quite popular in my teens. We even had a Lafayette retail store in Philadelphia, across from the Cheltenham Shopping Center. My buddies and I used to go there after school on our bicycles and play with the display radio's for hours.

I have used and still have the Lafayette (Laughing-Idiot) Comstat 25A. It was plain CB but in reading your post I gather you are looking more toward their amateur equipment. I really know little about it as I was economically challenged back in the early 70’s being just out of high school and having a girlfriend that didn’t share my love for wireless: except for the telephone of course.

Gang,
I want to purchase my first vacuum tube CB rig. Suggestions? Recommendations? I seem to remember Lafayette Radio CB's from the late 60's early 70's... Can't remember the names or model numbers but they looked like the Lafayette HA-410 10 Meter / HA-460 6 Meter rigs of the same era. Aside from that "auction site" where can I find them? This is my first post to the group by the way... Thank you  - Howie K3HW

1 watt will probably just barely even key the linear. A 5-7 watt dead key with upwards to even 15 watts will not hurt the amp.

Perhaps that's they way some operate, but I've always sold things differently. I put a fair price on them and you either want it or you don't. There's no negotiation.......all of that is just time consumsing BS. Perhaps it makes the buyer feel better like he got a great deal, but what's the point of advertising something for twice the price that you really want for it and then let someone haggle you down to your original price......simply wasted time. State your price and the buyer either buys it or he doesn't. It makes it very simple. Wow....it just dawned on me....that's exactly what stores do! Amazing how well it works there. You see the item, you see the price and you buy it or you walk away...simple.

Yes, that makes sense, in a Perfect World...
Unfortunately, my experience selling new and used cars at a Pontiac, Buick, Gmc, Chevrolet,, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan dealership has taught me a lesson...
EVERYBODY wants a Deal...
We all wan't a fair price, but everything's relative..
The Best Price is what you pay for it!!!
Life's not fair... Most people are living by the pirate's motto:
Take all you can...Give nothing back!
I don't say I'm one of them...
But Caveat Emptor is an OLD Saying...:)

My experiences are only 10 years with IBM were no breaks were given and 35 years doing special effects in the film industry wher when you told a producer how much a "gag" was going to cost he either accepted it or said " do something cheaper that will look like that"!
I had so many garage sales where I spen more time haggling with people over prices that at the end of the day I was worn out just from that. I started putting up signs at the entrance to my driveway...."prices are non negotiable". I had a lot of people turning way and less bantor during the day, but at the end of the day I was actually walking inside with more money than before. I guess what works for some doesn't with others and i do agree with you that everyone is looking for a bargain, but if they're not educated enough to know what a bargain price is when they see it then they don't really need it to begin with. That's where car salesmen come into play......sell them something even if they don't need or want it! ( no offense intended...just old school salesman humor!lol)

I have a Lafayette Comstat 25B which was given to me by a radio shop that only deals with solid state equipment... ( They also gave me a Maverick 250 and a Varmit 250 both of which work perfectly well and a Tempo One which is clean, but needs some work.
In any case, after seeing your post I plugged this radio in for the first time. It powered up fine and transmits extremely well with excellent output. The mike is a stock hand mike which you would want to replace. I listened to the transmit through my Golden Eagle and it sounded at bit muffled....bad mike. I also heard no receive, but although I didn't even bother to open the radio up my first guess would be that it simply needs a tube....and probably just the audio output tube. It's not perfectly clean, but would look nice cleaned up a little and actually has the original mobile mounting bracket still on it even though it made a monster of a mobile radio. It currently keys at about 4 watts and modulates to well over 10. It's yours for the price of packing and shipping from Georgia if you want it. I have way too many tube radios to even fir on my two tier bench and this will just sit until I either give it away or dump it.
So..... There it is.......

Can't remember the names or model numbers but they looked like the Lafayette HA-410 10 Meter / HA-460 6 Meter rigs of the same era. Aside from that "auction site" where can I find them? Hi,
Power supply is good.....need to clean it out well and tomorrow or Saturday will put the power to it to see what it does. It's not a 250 by the way....it's a 450! Small footprint though.... I didn't see the first driver tube when I first opened it and then when I did I checked the front panel again....the 250 doesn't have the first driver stage. This one should do a solid 400 watts or more with low wattage drive.
Regards,
   Bill

Hi,
Power supply is good.....need to clean it out well and tomorrow or Saturday will put the power to it to see what it does. It's not a 250 by the way....it's a 450! Small footprint though.... I didn't see the first driver tube when I first opened it and then when I did I checked the front panel again....the 250 doesn't have the first driver stage. This one should do a solid 400 watts or more with low wattage drive.
Regards,

Hi Adiran,
Yes I do, but they're not "Plain Jane" units and wouldn't sell cheaply. I have 2 extra Golden Eagles that are near mint and an extra General RadioTelephone Super MC-11A that dead keys at about 12-14 watts and modulates to almost 25 watts.... Like the Buddy Base....they're one of the loudest transmitting radios on the air....when you can find one, but they're pretyy rare.

Hi Bill
That probably puts them out of my price range as I am living on a Disability/SS income so I have to look for repairable items that are cheap and I can repair as I have the coins.
Thanks anyway, please keep me in mind if you run across any cheap tube radios.

Hi Adiran,
Yes I do, but they're not "Plain Jane" units and wouldn't sell cheaply.

I didn't see the first driver tube when I first opened it and then when I did I checked the front panel again....the 250 doesn't have the first driver stage. Hi Adrian,
I understand completely. Although I have 6 Eagles, a 2995DX, Stonewall Jackson, The Buddy Base and numerous other radios and linears to go with them they were all aquired when I was still working in the movie industry. I retired a year ago in less than half of what I used to make and that is including my SS so I'm just beginning to find myself in the same position. There's a $600 unit on eBay...( not CB related) that I want to get, but find that in order to do it I need to either wait and try to find another one or sell something that I have here.
I just went through this with my dog's $3000 surgery and parted with the main part of my stereo system.....a vintage McIntosh 275 tube power amplifier and in order to sell it quickly accepted about half of what it would normally bring. It was heartbreaking except when you realize that it's just a material thing that eventually can be replaced and even if it isn't will not be the end of the world.
I wish I had known about the group before I moved from California. I had over 20 Golden Eagles to sell, 8 Tram D201As, several DAKs.....tons of stuff and I ended up giving a lot of it away to anyone who would pay the shipping on it. Most of it required work, but were all easily repairable with only minor problems. Some of them were working perfectly as they were.
I'll keep my eyes open though. I do still have an extra linear that I will be selling, but again,,,,it will probably bring $300 or so. It's an 8 tube DNA Maverick that probably does about 350-400 watts or so and is in pretty nice shape. The only linears I'm keeping are my 12 tube DNA Phantom that I've owned since new for over 30 years, an XForce 700 for the Stonewall and 2995DX...( it needs at least 80 watts drive) and my Henry's 2 Kilowatt for the Drake......and I still haven't put up an antenna yet! I have some 80ft tall pine trees in my yard that would work as well as towers, but I need to wait until I can hire out a truck with a bucket to top one of them and mount a short mast with the antenna to one of them. I can wait. I had a chance to get a 60ft crank up tower in Ca before I left for $200 in great condition. I'm sorry I didn't now. When I look for them down here all I find are guys who want $1000 or more for their towers. I'd never pay that much for one.....especially having so many natural towers in my yard!
Anyway.... I'll check with a few friends and keep looking.
Regards,
   Bill

Have fun with the radios you still have, I had a nice collection of Johnson White and Black faces I had owned since new and 3 Lafayette radios that had been given to me over the years, and about 15 SSBs Sand state radios I had acquired also that went up in a fire when sparks from a neighbors burn barrel set fire to the trailer we were loading to move things. It was the 3rd and final load all of it ended in the dump as ash.
I haven't used a linear in more than 20 years as it is more fun chasing contacts with stock power, or QRP all the way.
