The many ways that friends and family are supporting Yael, Gaby & Luli at this
difficult time are deeply appreciated. In order to assist them with the
financial challenges that lie ahead, a fund has been established at Congregation
Netivot Shalom. Donations will help Yael with some of the immediate costs she
faces as well as long-term expenses such as Gaby and Luli's education. There are
two ways you can make a tax-deductible contribution to this fund.

#1. Donate online with Paypal:

Go to http://www.facebook.com/l/c109c;www.netivotshalom.org and click on the
"Make a Donation" link on the right side of the page. When you get to the Paypal
page, please put "Rabbis Discretionary Fund - Galinsons" in the Description box.

#2. Donate by check:

Please make your check out to "Netivot Shalom Rabbis Discretionary Fund" and
write "Galinsons" in the note area. Checks can be sent to:

For those of you following this story. I'm writing about similar issues in Uganda right now.

Malawian President Pardons Gay Couple On 'Humanitarian Grounds'; U.S. Praises Move

Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika "on Saturday pardoned a gay couple who had been sentenced to 14 years in prison and ordered their release but insisted that homosexuality was still illegal in his conservative southern African nation," the Associated Press/TIME reports. The president "announced the pardon on 'humanitarian grounds only' during a press conference with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Lilongwe, the capital," the news service continues (Tenthani, 5/29).

The U.S. praised the move by Mutharika, Agence France-Presse reports. "We hope that President Mutharika's pardon marks the beginning of a new dialogue which reflects the country's history of tolerance and a new day for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights in Malawi and around the globe," according to a White House statement released Saturday (5/29). In a statement, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton echoed the White House's reaction to the pardoning of the Malawian prisoners (5/30).

Debate Over HIV/AIDS Testing In Zambia

A high court in Zambia on Friday ruled that the Zambian Air Force (ZAF) violated the human rights of two employees when it tested them for HIV without their knowledge and subsequently fired them, IOL reports (5/28). BBC News looks at the debate over HIV testing in Zambia. According to the news service, "It is estimated that one in seven Zambian adults have the virus, yet only around 15% have gone for voluntary counselling and testing (VCT)." The article features comments from Elizabeth Mataka, the U.N. secretary general's special envoy for AIDS in Africa, the former president of the Zambia Medical Association, and several human rights advocates, who weigh in on mandatory testing's potential affect on HIV/AIDS rates in Zambia and the country's health system as well as fears over how it could lead to increasing stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS (Fidgen, 5/28).

It is with a very heavy heart that I forward this terribly shocking and sad news about the passing of Ted Sneed.  Ted was a PCV in Malawi in the early 60's but he also did a lot of work in the country when we were there in the 90's.  I was expecting Ted to arrive in SF in a week or so to help me with some construction so I was shocked when I found out this information this morning.  There is some contact information below if you want to get in touch with his family.

Dear Friends,

We wanted to share some information with you concerning Ted.  His death still seems unreal to us. His brother said that although Ted appeared to be in great physical health, the coroner confirmed that his arteries were occluded by plaque due to extremely high cholesterol.  Ted had only recently learned that his cholesterol was high and had just started on medication. He was jogging on the beach in San Diego when he had a massive heart attack. He was found unconscious and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Duane talked with Ted's brother Michael in Virginia.  He has already been to California to retrieve Ted's car and some other personal things.  He also went to Austin to take care of Ted's shop.  Michael said that his brother,Bob, will be planning a memorial celebration for July or August in Virginia. Ted's brother, Richard, lives in Rancho Mirage, and is hoping to plan some sort of memorial here in California later. If you want to send a note or contact Ted's family, here is the info:

Phone:  (703) 391-6167

Richard Sneed

Phone:  (760) 346-6311
no email

Michael said that he would appreciate it if we all could let others know about Ted.  They don't have any contact information.  We have spoken with (or emailed) the Lotters, Jerry Wolgin, Carla Basom, Carlton and Leslie Parks, Judy Ellis, Gordon Glass,  Maria Hornburg, and Michael Learned.  Jane has contacted Phyllis Bravinder,  Mike Hill, and Linda Millette.  If you are in contact with anyone else that knew Ted, please let them know -- and then let us know so that we can tell Michael.

On a less-business-like note, I just want to share how much Ted's friendship has meant to us.  Ted and I student-taught together in Peace Corps training, and then, as you know, he was   our closest friend in Malawi (Mlanda and Ncheu were only 35 miles apart.)  Our hikes up Mt. Mlanda were wonderful times of sharing and singing (did you know he had a beautiful voice?) We have seen each other many times through the years, and most recently ,he stayed with us while helping us build a fence and gate.  He played Team Trivia with us  on Tuesday nights in a local bar (he knew LOTS of stuff!) Afterwards, he came back to our house to watch "Glee" - and usually sang at the piano.  The three of us were really looking forward to meeting a guy from Malawi last Saturday night.  We all practiced the Malawi national anthem to sing for him. Duane and I did go - and had  wonderful conversation - but there was such a hole in my heart.    Ted was an interesting, interested, kind, caring, loving friend. We still find it hard to believe that he is gone. . .

Pitani bwino,

Nancy and Duane

David,

So glad to hear from you.  I have been searching for the name in SF of the infamous cottage/studio owner Ted was going to work on.  I had seen your name and number in his cell and address book but hadn't gottena round to contacting you.

As you can imagine, his family is still shocked about this news.  Hard to believe Ted is gone.  I'm his younger brother and probably the one he spent the most time with.  Ted has lived with us off and on when he came thru Dc - on the way to and from Africa.  And, it has fallen to me to handle his affairs now.  Not a pleasant job.

We are planning a memorial service in Arlington, VA, on Sunday, AUG 29, at 2 PM.  Please pass this along to others in your circle of Ted's friends.  Of cousre, any one who can make it is more than welcome.  We also welcome any pictures, thoughts, stories, etc.  We plan on having posters spread around the room that day.  Your E-mail was very much appreciated as it shows Ted's spirit and friendship.

Feel free to contact me if you so desire.

Mike

Dear all,

Our daughter, Evangelina, who has recently gained employment with Dove
Adoptions, a Hague Certified agency here in Oregon, has informed me that
the moratorium on international adoptions between the USA and Kenya has
been lifted. It appears there are several hurdles in Kenya to yet
overcome, but they are willing to start the various procedures to enable
adoptions which meet the Hague criteria.

Evangelina is interested to know if any of you have contacts in Kenya, are
living or working in Kenya, or can advise of agencies, governmental or
NGO, with whom she can initiate communication.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Hello Matt,
I didn't know you were going back to Malawi!  Did you travel with your family?  How long will you be there?  Any plans of visiting Dedza (and maybe having some chesscake at the pottery shop)?  Have a great trip!!!

Sorry Bink, we are not going south at all except to fly in and out of Lilongwe.  It is just Margaret and I we left the rug rats with my parents.  I am sure that my parents are tired of being parents of school children again.
John, let me put you in toch with a guy named Tom O'Brain (or something)  You two can work out the life sized chess pieces and better yet how to ship it.
The lake is beautiful, I forgot there were so many stars in the sky.  There must be hundreds and hundreds of them.
Later friends,
Matt

Although unrelated to the Madonna story, I just read this op-ed in the Washington Post about Malawi.
