After a glitch of several days on the topspinning.com board I decided to start a
new one at my site: www.ta0.com/forum
This forum will be very friendly to collectors not just to players.

I hope you visit.

The September 1962 Duncan newsletter, Clips from Clyde, (thanks Bob) announces
the new line of 5 tops: Chicago Twister, Sir Duncan, Twin-Spin, Whistler and
Imperial. The strange thing is that it starts by saying: "Its first new product
in a quarter of a century has been announced by Donald F. Duncan, Inc." Now, the
Spike Point, Yankee Boy and Double Header are older models but cannot be 25 year
older, I think. What gives?

Sorry for the delay. Here is the picture for the Reminisce magazine.

www.ta0.com/Button-n-String/tips_Reminisce.jpg

I am still missing the rubber tip. On that particular "ball-point
tip", the ball does not rotate, so it is not a bearing tips. I was
patented March 8, 1910 (other ball-point tips designs do rotate). Of
course, there are many more old peg top tips.

Jorge

PS: I am the new national champion! Woohoo!

Do you mean just Duncan points or any wood top? (I know you only
collect wooden ones). I don't know of any list. But I started my own
"tip" collection not long ago, inspired by the article on the 98 "Top
Lady", Judith Schulz, in Reminisce magazine. There there is a picture
of a group of tops all with different tips, some of which I have not
yet found.

Does anyone know where I can find the names of the different points
used on spintops and pictures of same. I know a few ie. spike, ball

Hi Jim

Actually, that Yo-Yo-man is not mine. I based my classification on a
list of Duncan tops that Steve Brown posted years ago and then added a
few that I found were missing. He had listed the yo-yo-man as having
both a spike tip and a plastic tip, this last being the first Duncan
top with a plastic tip. But this is information he had gathered from
old timers (Bob?) and it is probably not 100% accurate. And you also
have Duncan's own contradictions. For example, I have the Yankee Boy in
the American Flag card, which says in large letters "ball point tip".
But as you can see in the photo in my site, the tip is more shaped
like an arrow than a ball point. Or those plastic Sir Duncan that come
in a blister package that say "with magic winding groove" while they
don't have any (nor any other plastic Sir Duncan that I know of).

Looking for any Duncan spike point in bag with header card. Also looked
at ta0's photos and see he has a Duncan yo-yo man and says it comes in
a plastic and spike point the photo does not show the point.. I have 2
of these and they have the round point. Would love one with a spike
point and a plastic point. My Yankee boys and Double headers all have
different tips??? none are spike points except the orange one. Also I
want a Buster Brown with the Buster broen water stickers on it. Will
pay top $$ for any wants. Thanks Jim

A couple should be familiar: the one of the demonstrator and the clip
from Clips from Clyde. And there are a couple from this group (the
Spike Point and the no-foil Yankee Boy). Most of the tops I have, like
the Yankee Boy in the card and the Squawker. But I do collect pictures
from ebay auctions I don't win and I have used several of those. I
also got some pictures from Val Oliver from when her brother competed.
By the way, here in San Antonio I found Rusty, the 1963 champion! He
had some great stories. I had wondered if Duncan really paid those
$5000 (more than $30k current money) before going bankrupt but he
confirmed he got the check (not a scholarship) and had to pay more
than $1k in taxes.

Hi

I have a Duncan spintop gallery on my site, www.ta0.com (www dot ta0
dot com, that's t-a-zero). You'll find a nice picture there. Sometimes
there is the upper top of a double header for auction on Ebay, but it
is difficult to find a lower one to complete it, as it has no markings
and people would not know what it is.

So, Bob, you have Double Header prototypes? Wow!
Do you have any Duncan Spike Points?

Unfortunately, this board was practically killed when Yahoo changed to

I thought everyone would have left by now but I am glad that at least
Jim and Bob are still around.

I finally acquired one of the famous super-heavy Malaysian gasing
tops. It is a complete set with paddle, pedestal and rope. I bought it
from a collector that lives in Malaysia. She tells me that this one
won a competition in 2001 with a spin time of 1 hour and 27 minutes!
It weighs 6.5 pounds and is 8 inches in diameter. Here are some pictures:

http://www.ta0.com/museum/images/gasing/gasing_set2.jpg
http://www.ta0.com/museum/images/gasing/gasing_bottom.jpg

(I couldn't upload them to yahoo: I do not have enough "privileges")

The lady that sold it to me is very nice and knowledgeble. She even
plays with them, what is very unusual for a woman. She has a second
set on ebay:

Yes, we desperately need a new board for spintop collectors.
I am willing to put one under my spintop site, ta0.com (t-a-zero) if
necessary. I suggest you use the spintop player's "topspinning.com"
site until we have a collector's board up.
Have everybody a top day!

When you received the top there were no patent numbers imprinted on
the top itself nor on any of the packaging materials?

Hi, Those are hard to come by. No store or online store has them that I know of.
Your only hope is to get one used, and most of us want to hold on to these
awesome tops. Keep checking ebay and you might see one pop up, but don't be
surprised if you never find one.

BTW, this group is not very active. You should check out The Button -n- String
Board. It has much more activity.

Good Luck in your quest,
Michael
