DPW To Collect Residential Trash/Recycling Starting at 6 AM, For Remainder of Week, June 20 - 22, Due To High Temperatures

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that its trash and recycling crews will begin their collections an hour earlier, at 6 am, for the remainder of the week, Wednesday - Friday, June 20 - 22, due to predicted 90¡Æ and above temperatures and the effect of the 90¡Æ plus heat index.  Residents may put their trash and recyclables out for pick-up starting at 6 pm on the day before their collections so they do not have to change their morning schedules and to make sure these materials are collected.  Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day.

Throughout the summer, when the temperature and heat index are predicted to be 90¢ª or higher or the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announces unhealthy air quality (Code Orange or Code Red days), DPW collection crews will begin their work at 6 am to avoid health or environmental issues.

DPW TO OBSERVE INDEPENDENCE DAY, WED., JULY 4

DPW will enforce parking regulations around Nationals Park.  Sanitation services will be suspended for the day.

(Washington, DC)  The DC Department of Public Works will observe Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4, and most services will be suspended.  However, the Nationals will play home games at Nationals Park July 3-8, and parking regulations in that neighborhood will be enforced daily, including July 4.  Vehicles violating these restrictions will be ticketed and towed.  Other parking regulations, including expired meters, residential parking and street sweeping, will be suspended for the holiday.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Thursday, July 5.

In once-a-week trash and recycling collection neighborhoods collections will “slide†to the next day, so Wednesday’s collections will be made Thursday, Thursday’s collections will be made Friday and so on.

In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, normal collections will be made Monday and Tuesday; however, Thursday’s collections will be made Friday and Friday’s collections will be made Saturday.

Street sweeping will be suspended Wednesday, July 4 so motorists will not need to move their cars that day.

The Ft. Totten Transfer Station will be closed Wednesday, July 4 and will reopen Thursday, July 5 to residents to bring trash, household hazardous waste and e-cyclables between 1 pm and 5 pm.  To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the monthly Saturday drop-off, DPW accepts household hazardous waste and e-cyclables only the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month.  While DPW normally offers personal document shredding the first Saturday, items for shredding cannot be accepted on Thursdays because these documents cannot be protected until the shredding contractor arrives the first Saturday.

For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on the HHW link at www.dpw.dc.gov.

Directions to Ft. Totten, 4900 John F. McCormack Road, NE: Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Road, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Dear 14&U Fans,

: There will be CORN! Bernard says: He is picking bicolor corn right now. But
come early because it will sell out. Lots of different eggplants, hot and sweet
peppers including Attila's famous Hungarian peppers at Mountain View. Peaches
and Apricots, too.

Berries are in. Blackberries. Blueberries.. Raspberries, cherries, both sweet
and tart for pies.

This Saturday will be a true Early Summer Market, filled with lots of stone
fruit. I liked Mark Bittman's schematic of 12 great techniques and tips for
these peaches, apricots, cherries, nectarines: Butter Poached, Macerated,
Mostarda, Jam, Chutney, French-style, with Asian spices, Minty Fruit Salad,
Turkish Fruit Butter, Mexican Style, Dried --depending on whether they are
cooked in a saucepan, a skillet, a grill or left uncooked.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/06/24/magazine/stone-fruit-recipes.html

Whisked is humming along with market- inspired pies and sweets: this week it is
Mixed Berry Pie (blueberries, blackberries and raspberries in a flaky crust)
and Italian zucchini quiche made with sun dried tomatoes and mozzarella.
People should talk to Jenna NOW to place special orders for their 4th of July
dinners and picnics and festivities. And with Red, White and Blue, raspberries,
cherries and blueberries, there is a lot of scope for thematic desserts!

And Dolcezza pays homage to the blueberry craze with their various berries &
Cream gelato

MOUNTAIN VIEW: Taste the new Turmeric Beets, Cortido, Kimchi from Shawna's
fermented kitchen. Lots of tomatoes and yellow Hungarian peppers and purple
Islanders. Attila is a pepper whisperer. Is it because his family is
Hungarian? I don't know but he grows good peppers. Kales, Swiss Chard,
Carrots, Braising greens, Beets, shallots, Head lettuce, Squashes, and many
Cucumbers.

GARNER: Eggplants, candy onions (and Bernard writes: they are SWEET and perfect
for salads and burgers) Flat Italian beans, wax beans, green beans, arugula,
beets (yellow touchtone and red solos) , kohlrabi, blackberries, sweet cherry
tomatoes, peppers, blackberries, red raspberries, cucumbers, new potatoes,
celery, squash blossoms, summer squash in all shapes and colors and
nationalities. Cabbages, chard, red, Russian, Tuscan, green kales, Spring
onions. Strawberry Daiquiri mix, Strawberry Jelly, Jalapeno squash pickles.

PLANTMASTERS: Our own Pop- Up Garden center every single Saturday. Flowers,
vegetables and herbs to plant. Lots of succulents for home or garden. Cut
flowers include fragrant sweet peas, pink and blue hydrangeas and happy Gloriosa
daisies.

KUHN: Katy says: It's amazing how quickly and early the crops are coming in.
Sentry yellow and white Spring Snow Peaches. The first summer apples are in:
Lodi for applesauce. Berry Central here: Strawberries, blueberries, Red
Raspberries, sweet Cherries, pie cherries, currants, gooseberries. Garlic
Scapes. French breakfast radishes, leeks to grill or marinade and their baby
cousins, scallions. butter head and green leaf lettuce. Shallots. Beets.
Cider. Jellies and Jams. Dried Fuji apples. Oregano, Tarragon, Mint, Thyme,
Sage, Lavender, Catnip. Basil and Thai Basil. Bouquets.

MCCLEAF: Apricots, cherries, peaches. What a nice trilogy. Add red rasberries
and blueberries. Corey grows great kale. We have never figured out why his
kale is SO good, but it must be the soil. Red, green and dinosaur gray--green
(Lacinato, Tuscan) kale, . Mild spring onions with tops. Fresh garlic, Garlic
scapes.. Red and Romaine lettuce. Swiss chard, summer squash, radishes, kohlrabi
for the best slaw in the world, honest. Turnips, summer squash, sugar snap
peas, beets, Italian parsley and cabbage that I suggest you saute with ginger
and garlic and some of those hot peppers at Mt View. Fingerling and Red Norland
spuds for salads.

TRUCK PATCH: Ground Turkey. Bryan can hardly keep his turkey in stock. I am
hoping the boneless Turkey breasts will be back. Chicken, too. Eggs. Summer
squash Lots of Greens: lettuce, salad mix, stir fry mix, arugula, Swiss chard,
curly kale, herbs. Radishes. Pastured Pork ground pork, loose sausage, and
ground ham. Sausages: Kielbasa, Andouille. sage, celery, applewurst, country

Steaks, chops and tenderloins, spare ribs, baby back ribs, pork shoulder. Their
much admired bacon. Salad greens: spinach, arugula and mesclun. Kale, swiss
chard, baby Swiss chard . Spring onions, red, yellow and white. Beets, red,
golden. Squash with and without the blossoms, maybe a few cucumbers. Herbs,
chives, garlic chives, mint and chocolate mint.

PECAN MEADOW: All grass- feed -and -finished half Italian beef. Beef sausages
for non pork eaters. Pastured Lamb. Chcken whole and parts.. Eggs. Duck.
Guinea hens.
Lois is baking rhubarb dream bars this week.

CHERRY GLEN GOAT CHEESE: French- style Chevre, ricotta, crottins to grate, soft
rinded, brie like cheeses that are creamy in the middle and firm white on the
edges. Silver. Ash. Chipotle. Classic. Every summer salad goes well with goat
cheese. Please try a free taste Saturday if you have never had it .

PANORAMA ARTISANAL BREADS: More croissants, French style breads, baguettes,
loaves, boules, sliced and not.

See you Saturday.

Jim,

This great Adams Morgan business and this great Adams Morgan DCPS school have teamed up for a cool collaboration this hot summer!  Marie Reed is part of the Cardozo Feeder School System that serves the Adams Morgan, Dupont, Foggy Bottom, Logan Circle, and Shaw neighborhoods.  Shey White is a PTA officer at Marie Reed and Luba Vangelova is an incoming parent.  Both are Adams Morgan/Ward 1 residents.  I have also copied Principal Eugene Pinkard and Mellow Mushroom co-owner Pooja Mehta, a fomer child advocate.  This is a great team!

Anything you could do to share this information through your Ward 1 communications and outreach networks would be greatly appreciated.  Now that I have made this e-intro, I hope that you and John will be in direct contact with Shey regarding this matter.

Many thanks,

Monthly HHW/E-Cycling/Personal Document Shredding, Sat., July 7, At Ft. Totten Transfer Station

DC Residents May Drop Off These Items Between 8 am and 3 pm.

The Department of Public Works announced today its monthly Household Hazardous Waste/E-Cycling/Personal Document Shredding drop-off will be on Saturday, July 7, between 8 am and 3 pm at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station.  District residents may bring toxic items, such as pesticides, batteries and cleaning fluids to Ft. Totten, along with computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment.  Personal document shredding also is available and residents may bring up to five boxes of materials to be shredded.  No business or commercial material will be accepted.

To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept household hazardous waste and e-cyclables only on the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (July 5, from 1 pm to 5 pm).  While DPW normally offers personal document shredding on the first Saturday, items for shredding cannot be accepted on Thursdays because these documents cannot be protected until the shredding contractor arrives the first Saturday.

For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on the HHW link at www.dpw.dc.gov.

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Road, NE and continue to the end of the street.

Day of Atonement
a play by Rock Creek Sports Club member, Michael P. Moss.
The devastation of drug addiction, an impending judicial appointment, an unpaid debt, a release from prison and revenge all collide when two brothers, with very different paths, are reunited. Each must make fateful decisions, and accept the consequences, as long-held secrets expose contradictions in their lives. Issues emerge that call into question what it means to be a son, brother, father, a man.

Dear friends and neighbors,

If you're interested in learning more about Ward 2 schools and D.C. Public Schools' five-year strategic plan to improve student achievement (my favorite new goal: 90 percent of students will like the school they attend), please join Chancellor Henderson, Council Member Jack Evans, principals, teachers, and other education leaders this evening at the re-rescheduled Ward 2 State of the Schools forum.

5 pm - 8 pm

Francis-Stevens school, N street between 24th and 25th street, NW

I will be there early but must attend the DC State Board of Education's regularly scheduled June public meeting on revising DC's graduation requirements -- important work that demands your representative's full attention and has been on the calendar for months.

Don't have kids in public school? You still have a crucial role in improving education and opening the door of opportunity to our children - and our city's future. Ward 2 neighbors and communities have helped transform schools through volunteer efforts and show what great things are possible when committed people roll up their sleeves. In that vein, please read Courtland Milloy's superb and moving column about how his former Washington Post colleague has rallied his home town to turn around failing schools, starting with a program called Baby Steps to educate low income parents on how to turn their homes into 'learning environments' and prepare their toddlers for school success.

It really does take a village!

DPW To Collect Residential Trash/Recycling Starting at 6 AM, June 28-29, July 2-3, Due To High Temperatures

Residents are reminded that trash, recycling collections will be suspended July 4th, and will ¡°slide¡± the rest of the week.

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that its trash and recycling crews will begin their collections an hour earlier, at 6 am, for the remainder of this week, Thursday and Friday, June 28 - 29, and early next week, Monday and Tuesday, July 2 and 3, due to predicted 90¡Æ and above temperatures and the effect of the 90¡Æ plus heat index.  Residents may put their trash and recyclables out for pick-up starting at 6 pm on the day before their collections so they do not have to change their morning schedules and to make sure these materials are collected.  Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day.

Throughout the summer, when the temperature and heat index are predicted to be 90¢ª or higher or the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announces unhealthy air quality (Code Orange or Code Red days), DPW collection crews will begin their work at 6 am to avoid health and environmental issues.

Residents are reminded that DPW will observe Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4, and sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday.  They will resume Thursday, July 5.

¡¤         In once-a-week trash and recycling collection neighborhoods collections will ¡°slide¡± to the next day, so Wednesday¡¯s collections will be made Thursday, Thursday¡¯s collections will be made Friday and so on.

¡¤         In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, normal collections will be made Monday and Tuesday; however, Thursday¡¯s collections will be made Friday and Friday¡¯s collections will be made Saturday.

Hi Neighbors,

I am SO excited. I have been waiting for months to be able to tell you that
we...finally... have MUSHROOMS at the market. Joe and Sarah are coming to
market for the first time this week. Be sure to try the grey dove oysterss
"more solid and flavorful than most pale oyster strains. Generally they taste
sweetly shrimp-like, shrink little and hold their shape when briefly cooked." I
will post some recipes on the facebook page and have some recipes at the market
table.

Let me introduce Joe and Sarah. Although he is a physicist and she is a
lawyer, their greatest passion is for mushrooms. When I first met them, their
mushroom house was in Shaw, just a few blocks away. But they realized that the
space they needed was, shall we say, mushrooming... so they moved to Takoma Park
where they rebuilt a much larger mushroom house. That is why they were not able
to join us in May when we opened for the season.

That is the big news of the week and I hope every one of you will stop at our
new mushroom stand, Takoma Mushrooms. This week it is on the U Street side of
the market between Mountan View and McCleaf.

Besides our new mushroom stand, we have lots for July 4th celebrations:

Kuhn: Yellow Nectarines as well as white and yellow peaches and strawberries.
A deal on flats (12 pints) of blueberries and special prices on 2 fers (
gooseberries, currants, raspberries and blackberries ). Artichokes, shallots,
leeks, fennel, scallions, beets, radishes. Lodi and Transluscent apples for
applesauce.

Whisked: Jenna is making cherry pies for your July 4th picnics and sweet
corn, cheddar and Jalapeno quiche because she was so inspired by Garner's
bushels of corn last week. Her 6 inch pies are perfect for two (or one very
hungry guy) but she has larger pies for the festivities as well. They are just
not on the table but in the cooler. Ask her.

McCleaf: Blueberries raspberries, blackberries, yellow and white peaches,
lettuces, currants, kales, apples. Fuji apple juice (nice on a HOT DAY)

Garner: Yellow corn this week, hot and sweet peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, 6
kinds of summer squash, yellow, green and Roman beans, chards, kales, pickles,
strawberry daiquiri mix., new potatoes.

Pecan Meadow: Hamburger and ground beef central for the holiday. Lots of
steaks. Chickens. Duck. Lamb. Goat Eggs (chicken, duck, goose).

Truck Patch: How about some pork on the grill? Every cut of pork you can
imagine and all the sausages as well. I made spice -rubbed ribs again the other
night, cooked low and slow and then crisped. Delicious. Eggs (and maybe the
Turkey breasts will be back this week). Arugula. Baby Chard. Spinach. Red and
White Spring Onions. Kales.

Mountain View: Pickled Spicy Garlic Scapes, Kimchi, Attila's Hungarian
peppers, beets, cucumbes, chard, kale, lettuce, summer squash, mustards,
tomatoes..carrots. turnips. fennel. Kimchi and hot dogs (meat or faux) are a
classic mix.

Panorama: More croissants, more baguettes, more rolls for July 4th picnics.
Plus all the other breads

Cherry Glen: Provencal style Chevre, ricotta, semi aged soft rounds of brie
like Monocracies in Silver, Ash and Chipotle. Crottins.

Dolcezza: Perfect for a hot day. New flavors include: honey lavender and
chocolate mint plus all your favorites.

See you Saturday. Come early if it is hot. Visit Takoma Mushrooms and talk
to Joe and Sarah.

Dear Friends,

The Residential Parking Protection Act of 2012 will be voted on by the Council in early July.  Councilmember Michael Brown  and I are considering offering an amendment to extend the bill’s proposed changes to the Residential Parking Program to include areas in Ward One --- specifically, neighborhoods immediately around Howard University.

Under current law, the District will issue a Reciprocity Parking Permit to temporary residents who are full-time students --- even if their vehicle is registered out-of-state.  This allows them to take advantage of the Residential Parking Program.

Passage of this bill would disallow full-time students, residing in the area around American University from parking their out-of-state registered vehicles in RPP spots. (Georgetown and George Washington universities already have this restriction.) The legislation was offered in response to concerns that students are placing heavy demands on scarce street parking.

Of course, students with a DC registered vehicle would continue to have this privilege.

At this point, we are asking for your guidance on whether to further restrict full-time students’ participation in RPP in the Howard University area.

Please share your thinking with us prior to July 6.
