Our family is thinking of going to play in the snow tomorrow (my kids are very eager to see snow after 2 years!) but would need to quickly borrow a few items. If you have any of the following available, please let me know and I can pick them up from your house today.
For my daughter (age 10): size 3 boots (or slightly larger would be fine); snow mittens or gloves (the water-resistent kind)
For my son (age 8): size 1.5 boots (or larger)
For me: womens' size 7 boots (or larger)
For my mom: size 6.5 boots (or larger); snow pants and/or warm jacket would be a plus. (She's visiting from South Carolina and didn't bring any warm gear.)
Hello!
This coming Sunday Rev. Laurel will be back in the pulpit … and I’ll
be playing games, making origami and coloring with the children.
I
could use one or two teenagers or adults to assist me with the easy going and
fun Sunday with our children. (I will sign for community service hours for
teens, if they’d like.)
Please
let me know if you (or your teen) can help.
Sunday
school classes begin again on Sunday, January 10th.
The new session of Sunday school begins on January 10th. Over the next two Sundays (12/27 and 1/3), we will have games and crafts for children age 6 and above in the back lounge. Younger children will be in the blockroom with Michael and Adam.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Fellowship!
I
wanted to give you an update on my current medical leave. I met with my
doctor this week and he does not feel I am ready to return to work full
time. He has extended my leave for four weeks. I am able to work part
time and have started to catch up from home on e-mail and other items. I
will be slowly getting back into the swing of things and it make take me some
time; but I am very happy to be taking a step towards having my usual energy
back.
I
will be at the Christmas Pageant this Sunday and look forward to seeing all of
our angels, friendly beasts, magi and others. I am glad to be a part of
the Pageant … it will be the 8th or 9th year for me.
The
support and love I have received from all of you in the UUFRC community during
my medical leave has been wonderful. It has made me fully aware of the
many blessings in my life.
The costumes for most of our pageant participants will be located in the Back Lounge (across from the Art Room) in bags marked with the children's names. Please bring your child by 10 am to get their costume and put it on.
The pageant participants will have assigned seats. I will be putting names on the chairs. Please help your child find their seat around 10:20.
I have assigned leaders in the different groups to know the cues. Introduce your child to their group leader and let them know to follow their lead. The leaders are
Michael Withers (shepherds)
Lillian Svec (angels)
George Sliter (friendly beasts)
Marco Pretell (wise people)
Please return costumes in the Game Room (next to the Art Room) after the service.
Hi, I’m scheduled to help with the intersession Christmas cookie baking activity this Sunday for the kids during service. Unfortunately, I’ve been sick this week and have a lingering bad cough. I don’t think it is wise for me to plan to do this. I need a substitute. Is there anyone not already planning to be involved in intersession activities on Sunday who can substitute for me?
Our third choir director candidate, Kay Kleinerman, will be directing the adult choir this Sunday. As with the other candidates, we are trying to get together a group of kids to have a "mini choir session" of about 15 minutes or so after the service. Hope your child can be there!

Our second choir director candidate, Becca Ford, will be directing the adult choir this Sunday. As with the first candidate, we are trying to get together a group of kids to have a "mini choir session" of about 15 minutes or so after the service.
As I need to get Jadzia ready for her Willy Wonka performance, is there another parent that has been involved with children's choir that would help gather the kids and help Becca keep everyone organized (and give me feedback!!!)!
Just have your child show up at our session after church if they are interested. And make sure to give me or another search committee member (John Anning, Lory Kittamura-Tintor, or Kathy Warne) feedback from your child and/or from you.

We are having a series of 3 choir director candidates work with the adult choir and perform anthems over the next month or so. My daughter, Jadzia, rightly asked "Do the kids that like to be in the children's choir get to talk to them"? As the choir director will be directing the children's choir, talking with the children seems appropriate, as long as the children understand that they might not get their first choice but rather that what they think will be considered by the committee when making the selection.
If your child has been or would like to be in children's choir and would like to get a chance to talk with the candidates as part of a group for 10-15 minutes please let me know! Tomorrow is our first candidate, Danielle Crook. Email me if your child would like to talk to her. Please make sure to have your child give me or the other search committee members (John Anning, Lory Kittamura-Tintor, Kathy Warne) feedback. We'll meet at 11:45, probably in the sanctuary.

If your child's name is listed above, please let me know if your child cannot participate in the Christmas Pageant on December 20, if your child's name is spelled wrong, or I have them down for the wrong role. If I don't hear from you, I will expect your child to be present. See below for more details.
If your child's name is not listed above and your child wants to participate, please let me know by this Saturday (12/12) what role they would like and the correct spelling of their name.
If your child will be participating in the pageant, here are a few things you need to know.
Costumes: We will have materials for costumes at the Fellowship on Sunday, December 13. The children can assemble their costumes during the Intersession on that date. We will hold the costumes for them. If you can bring a bag in which to put the costume, that would be helpful. If you cannot attend on 12/13, you can assemble a costume on your own.
Arrive early: Please arrive at church by 10 am on the day of the Pageant (12/20) so that your child can put on their costume and find their seat. We will have the participants sitting in groups according to their role in the pageant. My intent is to have an adult in each group that knows the cue to go onstage.
Thanks for participating! I'm sure we'll have fun, as usual. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Hi everyone
We had a great time making shrinky dink art last week during the intersession.
We made chalices and general free form art! My intention was to take the
artwork and have the kids sell it at the Christmas bazaar this week. The only
hitch to that plan (and one I should have seen coming).. the kids fell in love
with their art!
So I told the kids that they could take their favorite piece and that I would
hand them out before the sale tomorrow.
Rob and I have been cooking up the shrinky dinks this week and they look great!
They will make great tree ornaments, key rings, pendants, etc.
Meet me at the beginning of the social hour with your child to pick up their
piece. I plan to hang out by the low round coffee table at the far end of the
social hall. After that I will be at the sale with the rest of the pieces. The
kids are welcome to help out at our table at the sale! A great way to see art
production and commerce in action, all for UUFRC.
See you tomorrow!
Kristin Caldwell
I was previously scheduled to help with intersessions this Sunday 12/6 and am assigned to help facilitate board games with Sarah Skovlund & Bill Kennedy (fun!). I can't make it because Ixchel is in the Area Championship games this weekend for her AYSO team, representing Redwood City U12 teams--exciting!
Is there anyone out there who would be willing to take on my role on Sunday and/or to swap with me for an intersession on 12/13 or 12/20?
Hi all- just a reminder about our luncheon that will be for sale on sunday
before the Holiday Bazaar in the Sanctuary. We will be serving vegetarian chili,
cornbread, brownies and apple cider for a $5 donation. Coffee and tea
complimentary.
The tricky part is that we have to transform the sanctuary immediately after the
service, so we'll be requesting that you move quickly to the social hall and
volunteers (thank you!) will be folding up chairs and setting up tables for our
members and neighbors in the community to display their handcrafts, baked goods,
etc!
Please plan to stay and do your holiday shopping- you will be supporting our UU
community as well as local crafters/vendors!
Looking forward to a successful day, Susan
Tomorrow is our last regular Sunday
School class this year! Thanksgiving is coming! Do you picture
a table piled high with yummy food and your family around it? Good
food tastes even better when you share it. That's one reason why
at Thanksgiving time Unitarian Universalists invite hungry people from
all around the world to be Guests at Our Table. We'll tell you how
on Sunday. We'll also make gorp to have as our snack and to bring
home to our families. We'll see you Sunday!

It's that time of year again and
tomorrow, Laura Withers will be visiting all RE classrooms to sign your children up for this year's pageant, Spirit of the Christmas Tree. Please let your child know if your plans do not include coming to UUFRC on December 20th. I'll be sending out a follow up email after tomorrow's sign ups and another reminder email just prior to the pageant.
Laura will be looking for a Mary and Joseph among the 8th-10th graders, a speaking angel (with one line) and a star (child holds a star on a pole) among the 6th to 7th graders, and other
non-speaking roles. Any children, 4th grade and older, who want to sing in the pageant will need to meet with Dawn Reyen (our pianist and choir director) in the Sanctuary after tomorrow's
service.
As always in our pageants, we enjoy having lots of little angels and animals of all kinds - we welcome little ones' ideas for non-traditional animals as well as the usual nativity story animals.
On December 13, pageant kids will come to the "costume bank" (the social lounge) to work on their costumes with fabric and other materials UUFRC has available. If your child wants to bring his or her own costume (angels, animals) or donate an outgrown costume from home for another child, that would be great too.
Derby D and I (pulling this together during Tracey's absence) look forward to your child's participation in this year's pageant!

Hi all, planning for the Christmas Pageant (Spirit of the Christmas Tree) is occurring now. Dawn will be directing the choir and playing for the pageant. As many of us have sung the music before we are planning only one regular choir rehearsal (Dec 17th 7 or 7:30-9pm) and getting together the morning of the pageant (Dec 20, around 9am). Consequently we need to be organized! If you normally don't sing in the choir but would like to join us for this limited committment we welcome you to do so!
Please let me know if you would like to participate so I can ensure we have enough copies of the music available. Final decision can be made close to the rehearsal but if you know earlier it will be easier for me to ensure the copies are made. Also, particularly if you have not sung this music before, please go ahead and get a copy of the music early from me to look at.
We would like to have a few youth (around middle school and up) soloists (or duets or trios). Due to Dawn's schedule we need to get the youth soloists set up by this Sunday. Please contact me if your son/daughter would like to sing a solo OR just sing with the choir.

Today's tool was a level, meant to represent balance. We talked about how, when we make a mistake, we can bring things back into balance through atonement. I think we had a great discussion about apologizing and what it does and doesn't do for both the giver and receiver of the apology.
Next week's tool is a hammer. I could still use a few more hammers for one of the planned activities, if you wouldn't mind bringing one in.
Next week will be the last class for Pam and me. Intercessions (intergenerational activities with a theme) will take place the following 3 weeks, followed by the Christmas pageant on 12/20. There will be intergenerational games on 12/27 and 1/3. The next unit, Islam, starts on 1/10 with the next set of teachers - Jen Davidson and Jorie Schultz.

I first heard this poem at my mother-in-law's service in 2007.
The Dash (copyright 1996 Linda Ellis)
I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth... and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own; the cars...the house...the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard... are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time
is left that can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough to consider what's true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile... remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read with your life's actions to rehash... would you be proud of the things they say about how you spend your dash?

I am very sad to inform you that our beloved Pat Crawford has died.
She had the flu, which became pneumonia. She went into the hospital and died five hours later.
Geri heard from her husband Ken this afternoon. He is being supported by family and would appreciate some privacy for the time being, so please, no calls for now.
We will gather informally this Friday evening in the sanctuary to light some candles and share our thoughts and feelings about our dear friend Pat. Please join us if you can. A memorial service will be planned for later.
It is hard to imagine UUFRC without Pat. She helped hold this congregation together during our lay-led period. She founded and led Open Gate Nursery School. She was active in this community in so many ways that it will be
impossible not to notice a gap left by her passing.
If you need to talk, please call.
We will be gathering Friday night at 7pm in the Sanctuary.
Sending You Light,

Guest-at-Your-Table boxes are for everyone. This has been a tradition for over 30 years working with the UUSC, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, as a major fund-raising effort. Next Sunday, November 15, after the service, we will be handing out the Guest-at-Your-Table boxes. The boxes will be collected in 2-3 weeks, on November 29 and Dec. 6.
During Guest-at-Your-Table, participants keep a colorful Guest-at-Your-Table box —
with photographs of special guests from around the world — in a prominent place
in their home, like the dining room table. Over
the next two weeks, participants get to know your special guests by reading
aloud to family and friends real-life stories from Stories of Hope.
Stories of Hope is the focal point of the Guest at Your Table experience,
connecting UUs to real people whose lives have been transformed by the shared struggle for human rights.
During Guest at Your Table, you or your family may also make daily
contributions to your Guest at Your Table box, as if sharing with your
special guests. When human-rights supporters share their blessings with
UUSC during Guest at Your table they ensure that UUSC's vital work to
advance social justice continues, year after year.
You and your family members can also earn become members of the UUSC by giving at the
membership level during Guest at Your Table.
The money collected is used to work with partner organizations from helping people work together to get clean water to helping communities around-the-world adapt to climate change and many other social justice projects.
So, after next Sunday's service, please pick-up a Guest-at-Your-Table box and a Story of Hope booklet.

Today's tool was a stethoscope, meant to symbolize listening. We played some listening games, then heard a story about and discussed the importance of listening, both for the listener to understand and for the speaker to feel heard. We discussed active listening skills (e.g., eye contact, nodding, reflecting back what the speaker has said) and tried these skills out. I wonder if they'll try them at home....perhaps that's too much to hope for.
Spoiler alert. Next week's (11/15) tool will be a level, meant to symbolize balance.
Any hammers brought next week will be used in the following week's (11/22) class (hmm, wonder what the tool will be that week).
Hello parents of preK and K group: My apologies for last minute email. If you are bringing your kids today, please bring a sweater or jacket as we will be going outdoors to pick our own special "class" tree. We'll watch it change and grow throughout the coming year as we visit it after today, in the winter and spring. We'll learn how to care for the trees and other plants and animals in our environment. If you can, have your child bring something that comes from a tree to class today.
