LAS VEGAS (AP) — A JetBlue captain who screamed that Iraq or Afghanistan had
planted a bomb on a Las Vegas-bound flight was locked out of the cockpit,
tackled and restrained by passengers Tuesday, passengers said.

The captain of Flight 191 from New York JFK International Airport had a "medical
situation" and that the pilot, who subsequently took command of the aircraft,
elected to land in Amarillo, Texas about 10 a.m., JetBlue Airways said in a
statement.

Josh Redick, a passenger sitting near the middle of the plane, said the pilot
"stormed out" of the cockpit.

Tony Antolino, a 40-year-old executive for a security firm, said the captain
walked to the back of the plane, that he seemed disoriented and agitated, then
began yelling about an unspecified threat linked to Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.

"They're going to take us down, they're taking us down, they're going to take us
down. Say the Lord's prayer, say the Lord's prayer," the captain screamed,
according to Antolino.

"He was irate," Redick said. "He was spouting off about Afghanistan and souls
and al-Qaida."

Gabriel Schonzeit, who was sitting in the third row, said the captain said there
could be a bomb on board the flight.

"He started screaming about al-Qaida and possibly a bomb on the plane and Iraq
and Iran and about how we were all going down," Schonzeit told the Amarillo
Globe-News.

The captain had been exhibiting "erratic behavior," so the pilot locked him out
of the cockpit, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Antolino, who said he sat in the 10th row, said he and three others tackled the
captain as he ran for the cockpit door, pinned him and held him down while the
plane landed at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.

"That's how we landed," he said. "There were four of us on top of him. ...
Everybody else kind of took a seat and that's how we landed."

An off-duty captain who just happened to be a passenger on the flight went to
the flight deck and took over the duties of the ill captain "once on the
ground," the airline said in a statement. It didn't elaborate.

Shane Helton, 39, of Quinlan, Okla., said he saw emergency and security
personnel coming on and off the plane as it sat on the tarmac at Rick Husband
Amarillo International Airport.

"They pulled one guy out on a stretcher and put him in an ambulance," said
Helton, who went to the airport with his fiancee to see one of her sons off as
he joined the Navy.

Helton said the ambulance then sat on the tarmac next to the plane for more than
30 minutes.

JetBlue said the ill captain was taken to a medical facility in Amarillo.

Once on the ground and off the plane, authorities interviewed each of the
passengers, according to 22-year-old passenger Grant Heppes, of New York City.

The FBI was coordinating an investigation with the airport police, Amarillo
police, the FAA and the Transportation Safety Administration, according to
agency spokeswoman Lydia Maese in Dallas.

She declined to comment on whether any arrests have been made.

As a result of the incident, the FAA will review the captain's medical
certificate — essentially a good housekeeping seal of approval that the pilot is
healthy. All pilots working for scheduled airlines must have a first class
medical certificate. The certificates are required to be renewed every year if
the pilot is under 40, every six months if 40 or over.

To obtain a certificate, the pilot must receive a physical examination by an
FAA-designated medical examiner that includes questions about the pilot's
psychological condition. The medical examiner can order additional psychological
testing.

Pilots are required to disclose all existing physical and psychological
conditions and medications.

In 2008, an Air Canada co-pilot had a mental breakdown on a flight from Toronto
to London and was forcibly removed from the cockpit, restrained and sedated. A
flight attendant with flying experience helped the pilot safely make an
emergency landing in Ireland, and none of the 146 passengers and nine crew
members on board were injured.

Service remembered in Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony
BULLHEAD CITY — "Cold, tired, wet, and scared," was a memory from Vietnam
shared by Mark Crough during Thursday's well-attended Vietnam Veterans Day
ceremony held at Mohave Community College. "I lost many friends in 'Nam," he
said.
Crough, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, also remembered being called a
"baby killer" when he returned stateside.

The April 2nd newsletter is in the hands of webmaster and Member Joe “Lurch”
Richardson,USAF,BOH’02. I just sent it as I was attending the NC Vietnam
Homecoming event at the Charlotte Speedway yesterday. Seventy thousand, reported
in attendance – frankly, the TV stations showed it as a wonderful event. My
take, “It sucked.” Yet I congratulate the USO for making the attempt. The only
thing I didn’t hear was a “Thank you.” broadcast by the Willy Yahoo types from
the bandstand to the college age “thugs” of the ‘60s that assisted a feckless
USA Govt to “surrender” 100 million Vietnamese to live under communism; and I
may have been the only Vet to tell the contingent of Montagnards, that had a
gathering at the event, “I’m sorry we abandoned you Republic (of South Vietnam).
Many Montagnartds immigrated the the US states of North Carolina and South
Carolina in the late 1970s after the ‘Nam war and lead productive lives making
contribution to the “pot” called America.

Now you know why our association is so important – have you reread our Mission
Statement lately?

I took our eldest grandson (age 14), our Oakridge Military Academy cadet, with
me. He surprised me with his response to “And so Zak, where do you see yourself
5 years from now?” “I’m going to be a Marine nonno (Italian for grandfather).”

Interesting, I wonder if I had anything to do with this? But who knows, young
men and women have flights of fancy and whatever he does he’ll have that very
important grounding that he receives at the “academy.” That “grounding” speaks
volumes about private education vs. the government schools where they now can
contest saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Allied troops were invading German-occupied
Europe during World War II. The prayer was read to the Nation on radio on the
evening of D-Day, June 6, 1944, while American, British and Canadian troops were
fighting to establish five beach heads on the coast of Normandy in northern

After H.R. 2070 the bill to simply engrave FDR's D-Day prayer on the WWII
memorial passed the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly 386-26, it was
assigned to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee where it sits on a
shelf.

World War II veterans have overwhelmingly supported H.R. 2070. "It is
unconscionable that the Obama administration would stand in the way of honoring
our nation’s distinguished World War II veterans," said Rep. Bill Johnson
(R-OH). "President Roosevelt’s prayer gave solace, comfort and strength to our
nation and our brave warriors as we fought against tyranny and oppression."

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has blocked this bill for two
months. I say it's time we call each of 22 Senators, at 202-225-3121, and bury
all 100 Senators in fax paper, demanding the FDR prayer be engraved on the WWII
memorial.

Japan Prepares To Open Fire On North Korea

April 4, 2012: For the first time ever, Japan will deploy warplanes under the
"self-defense" provision of their pacifist constitution. Adopted, under pressure
from the United States, the Japanese Article 95 (of the Self-Defense Forces Law)
allows Japanese military forces to deploy warships and warplanes to defend each
other. And that is what Japan will do this month as the Japanese Navy sends
Aegis equipped warships out to possibly shoot down North Korea's planned
"satellite launch" (which is seen as a violation of a recent North Korea
agreement to halt its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program). Japanese
F-15s will fly out to protect the Japanese Aegis destroyers. These ships carry
missiles capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, or low orbit satellites.
The Aegis radar system can locate and track these targets.

Japanese is deploying three Aegis equipped destroyers for this mission, two in
the East China Sea (south of South Korea) and one in Sea of Japan (off the west
coast of Japan). The F-15s are prepared to fire warning shots, or shoot down,
aircraft trying to interfere with the Japanese destroyers.

To help with this effort the United States is towing its SBX (Sea Based X Band
radar) to the area. SBX is a large long range radar built on a floating platform
that can be towed to wherever it is needed. The X-Band radar can see over the
horizon and gives anti-missile systems that maximum warning time that a target
is on the way.
