Police seeking man in Hilltop shooting
06/25/2002
The Associated Press
TACOMA, Wash. - Police were seeking a man Tuesday for questioning in
this week's killing of a 36-year-old man in this city's Hilltop
neighborhood.
Police said Dimitri Powell, 20, has a criminal record as both a
juvenile and adult, mostly for drug violations.
He is awaiting a sentence on a cocaine offense, to which he pleaded
guilty in April 2002, and also faces two other cocaine-possession
charges brought against him three weeks ago and in March, court
records show.
Tumblin was shot and killed as he confronted young men who tried to
crash his girlfriend's daughter's 16th birthday party, police and
witnesses say.
At about 12:40 a.m., one of the young men pulled a gun and shot
Tumblin twice, police said.
"He was a good guy," said LaShonda Walker, the teenager whose
birthday was being celebrated.
LaShonda said the young men had been at the party earlier in the
evening, but were trying to get back in when Tumblin told them the
party was over.
Then, she said, one of the young men threw a rock and broke the
home's basement window. Tumblin went out to confront the group and
was shot.
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said Tumblin "wasn't a
fighter." "He was a nice guy," the neighbor said. "He'd come up and
talk to you at the fence."
