1. Go Green Event in Vinita Park
Volunteers needed for city-wide event – September 10, 2011

The Village Church (TVC) of St. Louis along with the City of Vinita Park are collaborating to sponsor a city wide GO Green and TVC Open House event.

Vinita Park is one of the few cities in the mid-county area where residents do not individually pay for trash/recycling collection. The results of a recent homeowner survey found that over 72% of the residents recycle. We can do better. We have some fun games and events planned for the children, i.e. the trash bag relay games, aluminum can stacking, water games, eco-coloring contests and face painting. We need help with staffing the activities.

The City of Vinita Park is located less than five miles from the WU campus and The Village Church is located @ 8145 Page, St. Louis, MO 63130.

To volunteer, please contact Donna Hall at dkttkd@... with “go green” in the subject line, or call 314-258-0133.

2. United Way 9/11 Day of Service
National Day of Service & Remembrance

2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a moment that through tragedy brought together cultures, bridged differences and united citizens of goodwill around the world in a spirit of unity and commitment. In tribute to all of those who were lost and the tens of thousands who rose in service, 9/11 has been designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary, United Way of Greater St. Louis is leading an effort to engage 5,000 volunteers in service projects throughout the region on and around September 11, 2011.

Visit stlremembers.org to learn about various volunteer activities and remembrance events throughout the region and sign up for projects that interest you.

You can stay updated about 9/11 activities by subscribing to the

 3. White House Internship – Spring 2012

The White House Internship Program is a reflection of President Obama’s commitment to provide young leaders an opportunity to strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office, develop their leadership skills and actively engage in public service. A completed application includes two essays, three letters of recommendation, and a resume. The deadline to submit an application is Sunday, September 11, 2011.

Apply online at http://whitehouse.gov/internships and email intern_application@... with any questions.

4. Children’s Home Society of St. Louis
Volunteers needed to work with special needs children

Volunteers are needed to supervise a playroom of 3-6 children while their parents attend a support group. All children have special needs such as epilepsy or autism. Volunteers are needed the second and fourth Tuesday morning of each month.

Contact Diana Meyer, Prevention Coordinator, at dianam@... or 314-968-2350, ext. 239

5. Public Media Internship with the Nine Network
Applications being accepted now

The goal of this internship is to help students learn the diverse facets of working in public media, including projects in new media, community engagement, administration and other special projects as assigned. Interns will work primarily with Nine Network’s Special Projects Manager on new media projects, including but not limited to a multi-platform project called Nine Voices, an initiative to uncover new and diverse local voices around issues that matter to the St. Louis region. Online, community members will be invited to share an innovative idea around arts and culture, education, environment, science and other topics, in the form of short videos.

Interns will play a significant role in this initiative, including locating interesting individuals in our community, assisting them in the creation of their video, working with the community to define the topics that will be issued through nineVoices.org, managing the online content and defining how participants will be utilized in other programs on air and in the community.

Anyone who is interested should submit a resume to Emily Haight, Special Projects Manager, at ehaight@...

Your Time is Coming

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time...though it tarry, wait for it.”
(Habakkuk 2:3, KJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

If you’ve been standing in faith for the promises of God, I want you to know today that your time is coming! The dreams and desires in your heart, the things you want to accomplish, the situations you want to see changed will happen. Don’t give up just because it has taken a long time, or just because you’ve tried and failed.

I encourage you today — get your fire back! Don’t be complacent about pursuing what God has placed in your heart. It may be taking a long time, but God is a faithful God. No matter how long it’s been, no matter how impossible it looks, if you’ll stay in faith, your time is coming. Every dream that’s in your heart, every promise that has taken root, God not only put it there, but He has every intention of bringing it to pass.

Declare today, “My time is coming...God is working behind the scenes on my behalf...I will fulfill my destiny...I will fulfill the plan God has for my life!” As you declare, expect, and wait for the appointed time, your faith will grow. Your hope will grow. And you’ll step into the destiny God has in store for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in Heaven, I receive Your truth today and hold on to Your promises. I ask that You ignite my heart with Your holy fire so that I can pursue Your perfect plan for my life. Make my thoughts and words agreeable to Your will as I meditate on Your Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Daily Word

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

I’m always interested to see what kinds of books Christians are reading today. I wonder if I asked some of them to list the last five books they’ve read, how many would be able to name one that has helped them know God better?

As a Christian, you ought to be building a personal library of books and other resources that help you understand the Bible and will help you answer questions from unbelievers. And today, with so much information right at your fingertips, there’s no excuse to not use those resources!

As a believer, you need to be able to communicate your faith effectively and consistently because if you’re living the Christian life, there will be somebody who’s going to say to you, “Tell me what’s different about you. Why do you act the way you act?”

So if you don’t have any books that are helping you grow as a believer in Christ, do some homework this week and write down at least five spiritually-edifying books you can read and go get them. Allow God to sharpen your mind so you can know Him better and share Him with others more effectively!

ALLOW GOD TO SHARPEN YOUR MIND BY READING RESOURCES THAT WILL HELP YOU BETTER KNOW AND EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE GOD’S WORD!

Find God's comfort in times of trial.

Follow the Leader

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 8:14

Recommended Reading
Galatians 5:16-26

Directionally challenged people everywhere were thrilled when navigation systems became available. No longer would the embarrassing, "I'm lost" phone call have to be made. Now we travel worry free, allowing the system to do the work for us--until it leads us astray. For every appreciative GPS story, there are just as many frustrated users who circle a block three times before realizing there's not a restaurant in sight, or far worse, find themselves teetering on the edge of a cliff that their navigator insists is the safe route.

As Christians, we have an internal guide--the Holy Spirit--and He is like our life navigation system. But unlike our GPS, we can trust Him even when He's taking us down an uncertain road, because ultimately His way is best.

So the question is simple...will you follow? If we trust our GPS to guide us on a cross-country automobile adventure, shouldn't it be easier to follow the Holy Spirit through the journey of life? We may not always know where we are, but we will always be exactly where the Lord intends us to be.

When led of the Spirit, the child of God must be as ready to wait as to go, as prepared to be silent as to speak.

When Tragedy Strikes
by Charles R. Swindoll

Read 1 Kings 17:17--19

I'm deeply impressed by the man's gentleness. Though Elijah deserved none of the woman's blame, he stood silent under her blast. That's gentleness. Someone, somewhere, has called this fruit of the Spirit "the mint-mark of heaven." When it is present in a highly-charged setting such as this, it becomes a testimony of the Spirit of God at work in the one who could lash back, but doesn't. It is His life, at that gentle and tender moment, being made evident.

I am also impressed with this grieving mother. She, without question or hesitation, places her precious, lifeless son into Elijah's arms. Perhaps the prophet's gentleness suddenly melted her and prompted her, once again, to trust him.

Then, Elijah, the man of God, silently climbed the stairway to the room where he had been doing battle before God on a regular basis. I say this because I believe that Elijah had spent hours, even days, on his knees in that room. He had formed that habit while alone with his God at Cherith.

Do you have a room like that---a place where you meet with God? Do you have a quiet retreat where you and the Lord do regular business together? If you don't, I strongly urge you to provide yourself just such a place---your own prophet's chamber where you and God can meet together. It will be there that you will prepare yourself for life's contingencies. Without it, you'll lack the necessary steel in your foundation of faith.

What do you do when tragedy strikes? What do you do when a test comes? What's your first response? Is it to complain? To be angry? To blame? To try to reason your way out of it? Or have you formed the habit of doing what Elijah did? Do you go to your special place and get alone with God? Elijah provides a wonderful example for us. No panic. No fear. No rush. No doubt.

Here is today's PearlyGates item.

Elevated Train

A man has to attend a large convention in Chicago. On this particular trip he
decides to bring his wife. When they arrive at their hotel and are shown
to their room, the man says, "You rest here while I register. I'll be back
within an hour."
The wife lies down on the bed. Just then, an elevated train passes by very close
to the window and shakes the room so hard she's thrown out of the
bed.
Thinking this must be a freak occurrence, she lies down once more. Again a train
shakes the room so violently, she's pitched to the floor.
Exasperated, she calls the front desk and asks for the manager. The manager says
he'll be right up. The manager (naturally) is skeptical, but the wife
insists the story is true.
"Look, lie here on the bed. You'll be thrown right to the floor!" the woman
says.
So he lies down next to the wife. Just then the husband walks in.
"What are you doing here?" the husband asks.
The manager replies, "Would you believe I'm waiting for a train?"

newlyweds on the Cybersalt site. It was taken on my first generation iPhone so
give a poor father of the groom a break.

Meet the Parents

A young man looking to get married asked his friend. "Every woman I bring home
to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like."
"Oh, that's easy," his pal replied. "All you have to do is find someone who is
just like your mother."
"I did that already," he said, "and that one my father didn't like."

What Does Your Horn Say?

Do you remember when the whole lower half of a car's steering wheel used to
constitute the car's horn? A car horn that was half the size of the
steering wheel made it so much easier and fun to find and hit than locating
today's microscopic, camouflaged little buttons. How are you ever supposed
to find and use your horn in the nanosecond you have in case of a pending
accident?

But it was a daughter's comment that made me ponder the changing role of yet
another thing I thought would never change. She said something to the
effect that a horn was mainly for communicating to another driver that you are
angry with them. I was a little shocked.
When had a car horn become mostly an instrument to express road rage?
How were we communicating that to her? I didn't think of a car horn that way at
all!
So I started to tell her all about all the old-fashioned uses of the trusty car
horn. Isn't a horn primarily for accident prevention? To warn another
driver that they are straying into your path, or in danger of hitting you? For
such uses, the little buttons are woefully inadequate.
Unless you drive with your thumb or finger poised over the button, forget it.
You can never find the horn that fast.
How else are horns used? Well, of course there is the friendly little "hello"
honk. Then there is the romantic or flirting honk. Then there is the
sentimental goodbye honk: one woman taps her horn lightly whenever she leaves
her mother's home - a cute little ritual that somehow signals all is
well between them. A goodbye honk is like a goodnight kiss: hard to do if you
are mad at someone.
It is an unfortunate sign of the times if my kids have come to think of the horn
as a thing you use to sound off at another driver.
So what are we teaching our kids by example and what they absorb from the rest
of society if they look at car horns primarily as a tool of aggression?
The increase in road-rage and the erosion of the old-fashioned
accident-preventing car horn to the point where the horn is mainly an accent
mark for
flaring tempers is undoubtedly due to many factors.
But can we stem this trend by taking a look again at how we see other people?
When we respect other people as God's creation, as people that God also
loves, we move even our road etiquette up a little higher on the civility scale.
