Chicago Area Polymer Clay Guild
April 18, 2012
In attendance: Karen, Jen, Margo, Gretchen, Susan K, Marji, Diana, Patty, Jen G, Susan B, Nikki, Alice, Rita, Jenny, Wilda, Joan, Becky
The meeting was called to order at 7:20 pm. The raffle item was a sand angel donated by Wilda. The winner picked later in the meeting was Susan K.
Librarian's Report: Wilda ordered Polymer to Art, Black and White, and preordered Polymer to Art, Yellow. Marji noted that Polymer to Art is soliciting projects for future issues. Their website (http://www.frompolymertoart.com/c-862993/write-for-us/)
details how and what to submit to the publication.
Wilda will be placing an order for CaBezels from Shades of Clay.
Treasurer's Report: Jenny announced that the current balance is $3357.24. This amount does not include the almost-$1000 profit from the Christi Friesen workshops. The officers will get together to decide what to use the workshop profit for. A suggestion was made to put it toward our next workshop.
Jenny announced that the big room at the church is now our permanent room and we can start having clay nights during guild meetings. Anyone who wants to bring clay materials (no motors) to work on during the meeting is welcome to. She also said that we can start using the room as early as 6:00 pm.
Jenny discussed two more items of business: She requests that no one use coins for the raffle and anyone who needs to be reimbursed by the guild must submit her receipt(s) within 6 months of the expense incurred.
Program Coordinator's Report: Dave Magart was scheduled to be our featured speaker, discussing tips on photographing our work, but he had to cancel, so Margo (scheduled for next month) stepped in and gave a very detailed presentation on wire wrapping.
Dave will be at our May 16 meeting for his presentation.
The Guild's birthday party will be held on June 20 at Marji's cottage. We will have a potluck dinner, starting at 6:30 pm, and Marji will demo how she uses translucent clay.
Our meeting on July 18, 2012, will be a clay play night with pizza and salad, sponsored by the Guild. Everyone is asked to bring her own beverages. This meeting will start at 6:00 pm.
Workshops: At the last meeting, Marji had surveyed the membership for whom they would most like to have as an instructor for our next workshop. Lynne Ann Schwarzenberg was the person with the most votes, so Marji will ask Ann H (not at the meeting) to contact Lynne Ann to find out her availability and costs for a workshop.
IPCA Report: Ann H was not able to attend the meeting and give her report, but Marji noted that the IPCA meeting, Synergy, will be held March 13 through 16, 2013, in Atlanta.
President's Report: Marji had spoken with Jen from Art Clay World and they had come up with some possible dates for a clay day (April 28, May 5, or May 12). Although the prospect of using ACW as a venue for a clay day was met with great enthusiasm, very few people at the meeting were available for any of those dates, so we decided to hold off for now and schedule a clay day for another time.
Marji had suggested increasing our guild membership with a "Bring-a-Friend" initiative and member sale. Because of other upcoming plans, we tabled that idea for now and will come back to it at a later date.
Marji will be late to the May meeting and asked Susan K to officiate until she is able to get there.
Jeff Dever is leading a workshop in France in September, and Marji will be attending. She noted that there are still two openings for the workshop in case any guild members are interested/available.
Member Announcements: Patty recently gave a presentation at the Lemont Artist Guild about polymer clay. She also announced that her glass eyeballs (perfect for Christi Friesentype sculptures) are available for sale.
Susan K had spoken with Jennifer Patterson (Quilted in Clay) at a convention. Jennifer had said that she would be happy to demo at a guild meeting if she happened to be in town or passing through on the date of a meeting. Diana will follow up.
Jen updated us on new member Susan W's condition. Susan had been taken seriously ill several days earlier. All present sent well wishes to Susan through Jen.
Program: Margo gave a very detailed demo on working with wire and how she creates her beautiful coil rings and hinges.
Show and Tell: Alice, Rita, and Becky had attended the Detroit retreat and brought in pieces and information from the retreat.
Several other members brought in recent works to show the group.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 pm.
Minutes respectfully submitted by Susan B on April 26, 2012.
