1. Are there many known feral Trumpeter Swans in the area? I know
about the ones at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Crabtree Farm in Lake
Bluff has had a pair for years now. (The manager there has also
introduced Wild Turkeys recently. Someone (Bill Moskoff, I believe)
was working on a count there and asked the manager if the turkeys were
wild. He said "Well, they were when I bought them." Hmmm...)
2. Bob, is a Western Gull next, after the sandpiper and kingbird?
3. Rehabbing individual birds doesn't do much for bird populations,
but I'm sure it's appreciated by those birds. The same lack of
immediate, substantial impact is true for most of our individual
actions, like paying membership fees, helping out at a homeless
shelter, etc. You can't build a beach with one grain of sand, but if
you take away all the grains of sand there isn't any beach.
