This List has been rather quiet recently, and I am wondering if there
are any new developments on the KI front. My attention was recently
called to an IAEA document, _Preparedness and Response for a Nuclear
or Radiological Emergency: Safety Requirements_ (IAEA Safety
Series, GS-R-2, 2002).
Page 53 (An Addendum to Annex III) has an interesting comment re
KI: "The administration of [KI] to the public is an effective early
measure for the protection of the thyroid to prevent deterministic
effects and to minimize stochastic effects for persons of any age.
However, _it is primarily intended for the protection of children and
of the embryo or foetus_." [emphasis added]
This is consistent with comments / rumours I have heard (but for
which I can
find no reference) that some jurisdictions are not recommending KI
prophylaxis for persons above certain ages. These ages have ranged
from a high of 40 (WHO, I believe) to as low as 18.
Can someone verify these claims and provide me with appropriate
Also, perhaps someone would care to discuss and provide opinion?
