it was amazing. I knew someone their, so it helped to have them to
guide me around, but even still there is so much to see and do and
the people are (on the whole) very genuine and helpful.
Athens is a city of 4million people and never shuts down, however
outside the tourist season most of the greek towns on the islands go
from a (tourist) population of thousands to, in extreme cases, as
low as 100 because only the actual inhabitants stay in the town. But
in saying that, when i was in Skopolos in summer 2002, the man and
his family who ran the hotel went to Thessoliniki outside the summer
So, all in all, DEFINATLY stay in Athens! Make sure you see the
Rembetika and many of the famous greek pop/rembetika singers come to
Athens during the winter. They can be pricy but well worth it. And
the temperature in Athens is usually not that low in the winter
compared to say the east coast of the US or the UK.
