I had visited Jack on Friday, and remarked to you all,
in email, that he sang harmonies on some tunes, and
even had a guitar in his hands.
Johnny told me he got worse on Saturday, and Sunday;
on Monday he was even worse, and
his feeding tube looked bad to Johnny.
Tuesday morning he regurgitated maybe two pints of
blood. Two ladies from Hospice came immediately,
and one lady held him in her arms while he died.
God Bless her!
He was conscious the whole time. He looked at "Pop"
(Johnny), and said "I love you, Pop", and then he died.
As a discussion with you readers, we all know that
Jack could be difficult, but he was also kind and patient
with many people. He had a musical vision, and had the
courage to fulfill that vision, all these years.
He was a bluegrass pro, had his own band for 15 years, knew
almost everyone in the bluegrass world, and had music in
his soul. He did things on the banjo no one else did,
was a prolific musician, making maybe 8 or
9 bluegrass CDs, including many original banjo pieces
(Echoes of a Legacy)
He could scowl when the music was faulty, and lit
up in neon and smiled when it was good. He was
one of a kind!
His death occurred at about 12:30 PM,
Tuesday, July 29th.
His viewing will be this Thursday, July 31st, at Davis
Funeral Home, in Smithsburg, Md., from 7 to 9 PM.
Here is the address:
Davis Funeral Home
12525 Bradbury Ave
Smithsburg, MD 21783
Davis will be open most all the day, so 2nd shifters
can probably stop by to pay respects at any time that day.
Johnny will take CDs to the viewing and visitation, and
I'll tote the Martin, and do some gospel. Kenny Wise had
just written me today, wishing to play for Jack, so if Kenny
comes, maybe he'll play Jack's favorite of his: "In the Garden".
The burial will be on Friday, August 1st, at 1:00 PM
in nearby Ringgold, Md. The Sanbowers have several
burial plots there.
Thank you for helping Jack through this terrible time of
suffering. Cards and donations, as always, can be sent
23468 Whitetail Rd.
Smithsburg, Md. 21783
God Bless you all!
