Leadership - we have none.
Kate Blackwell 20th December 2003
Our government is failing us in so many ways at this time but in essence it is a failure of leadership.
Leadership involves making difficult, unpopular choices for the greater moral good. Sadly, many Australians agree with the Pacific Solution because it has been presented to them by their government as a measure to keep them safe, a measure to secure their borders. A brave leader would instead persuade Australians that it is wrong to deny these people asylum, that we have a moral obligation to help fellow human beings.
Now the policy is in disarray they will still not be honest and admit it but keep making statements of the facts as they wish them to be. Afghanistan is not safe, Iraq is not safe, these people are not queue jumping opportunists. It doesn't matter how many times they say it is otherwise. It is just not true.
Our government has chosen to sacrifice the happiness and health of these people for domestic political gain. That is why they are not leaders but politicians. Australia has enough politicians. We need some true leaders.
