The Iraqi political situation today shows that there is no Iraqi party that rallies people to an Iraqi agenda that represents, reaches and benefits ALL Iraqis and that all we hear and see is sub-identities. There is no party or movement that could make a real presence in the latest election that represents Iraqis. Iraqism is lost in the midst of Arbism, Kurdism, Tukumanism, Sunnism, Shiism, Asyyrism, Yazeedism and all other subidentity-isms but no Iraqism.
In the last election there were two parties: Al-Iraqia of Dr. Ayad Allawi and Iraqiyyon of Sheikh Ghazi Al-Yawar. Both are Iraqi by name but not based on the concept of Iraqism.
The country and the Identity that is the precursor of all these subidentities and the womb that those identities lived in and owe their survival to is not present in the political arena.
It is a long standing that stems from the Arabization movement of Iraq. We have been taught that Iraq is a province of the Arab state (qutur) and hence the real identity of Iraq was dissolved in the Arab entity and identity.
Iraq is a nation with peculiarities and characteristics that make a nation. It has always been there identified geographically as the land of two rivers and many civilizations.
We need to embark on this ideology and concept and build on it.
I have been one of the advocates of this ideology for the last twenty five years or so. A friend of mine Dr. Ghassan Al-Atiyya is a prominent advocate of Iraqism.
Another gentleman who has contributed immensely to this cause is Mr. Saleem Matar who has written a wonderful book about the Iraqi identity ( Al-That Al-Jareehah).
I believe that Iraqism will rise again as every Iraqi I have spoken to about the political crisis of Iraq today believes in the Patriotic/ Iraqi solution to the problem.
There are two great endeavors that have contributed to this cause. Please see Mesopotamia website and Future Iraq website. The latter is the group that had great video clips showing Iraqi unity. I am sure you will be thrilled again with these video clips.
Let us celebrate our great identity, the greatest identity of all; the Iraqi identity. It has just started and I believe it will never stop . We need Iraq and its identity and Iraq needs its people; (us)
