A very disturbing and serious news has been appearing in the press about the disposal of the hazardous waste of the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal. It seems that efforts are on to dispose this waste in Taloja. Earlier I had been informed by some BMC persons that the waste would be incinerated at Taloja and disposed off at the Deonar dumping ground.
I do not know how many of you are aware that sometime back a container full (33 Tons) of meat from some foreign country was illegally dumped at the Deonar dumping ground. All this after the contents of this container was "exposed" by some locals and sent back to JNPT to be shipped back to the country of its origin. Inspite of this; how was the container "smuggled" out of JNPT, managed to cross the octroi naka, got "permission" of the BMC to enter the Deonar dumping ground and finally "managed" the UPL company to illegally dispose the contents. This is just to illustrate that rules, assurances, denials by the authorities have no meaning. We have to be vigilant and protest/pressurise the authorities to stop any hazardous waste of the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal to be disposed in our state.
I feel ALMANAC/AGNI along-with other NGOs should oppose this move strongly. Please do not delay in deciding and act NOW.
Forward to all your contacts.
Please respond immediately with ideas/suggestions for handling this sensitive issue.
