Krishna Jain has suggested an elegant
practical idea that would help the victims immediately.
The idea is in 3 parts:-
1) Encourage local people to
provide accommodation for the homeless.
2) Encourage Guest Houses
(Dharmshalas) to take in the homeless.
B) Part 2
To bring those who wish to help and
those who need help, the local aid organisations should list both and ensure
that the vulnerable are not exploited.
C) Part 3
Both private individuals and
dharmshalas that take in earthquake victims should be given financial
This could be done in 2
1) by the aid organisations generally
2) by individuals sponsoring
individuals or families
The cost of sponsoring the
accommodation will be trivial by western standards. Just $50 to 100/month
should be more than enough to accommodate and feed an entire
While we definitely want and need the
whole world to help, imagine if the 1,000,000 Gujratis in the UK and the US,
sponsored just one individual's accommodation each. It will help immensely with
the immediate problems while Kutch is reconstructed.
If you feel there is merit in this
idea, perhaps you could start people and aid organisations thinking about it and
setting up lists immediately so that overseas (and local) people can start
sponsoring individual and families. I know there are meetings taking place
all round the world this week-end to find ways of helping the victims in the
short and long term. You may like to consider this suggestion at your
meeting and even ask people to register their interest in sponsoring a
One additional benefit is that those
who have lost all their family in addition to their homes would realise that
they are not alone if they were living with a family. This may help to
ease the emotional pain.
Sorry for the wide circulation but it
is such an elegant idea, it has to be tried!
