This morning, Chiquila informed me that Imani, the classically trained cellist, mother of 8 and my former neighbor on Cherry St., was arrested for unpaid fines blah, blah, blah. It's real that jail is the equivalent to debtors prison. In the words of the sitting judge today Judge Henry Clay, Imani must "pay or stay." She owes over $1800 in old fines, family. Her oldest son Kwame will pay $200 to get her out today. She has to pay another $850 by 31 December 2009. After that, she'll need to pay $150 monthly until the balance is paid. During these times, $1800 might as well be $18,000!
Family, as much and as often as Imani has given to the community, please let's through collective effort and responsibility pool our money to help her out.
