... From: Mani Varadarajan To: Cc: Sent: Tuesday, July 18, 2000Message 1 of 4 , Jul 18, 2000View SourceDear Bhagavatas,
I would like to add a few words about our experience with
Sri Sri Tridandi Jeeyar Swami during Swami's visit to the
Bay Area. Sri Swami commands a very unique and very appealing
presence, and all of us that day felt it. There is something
mysteriously charming about him, in a way that completely
removes all of one's reservations and makes him very
approachable. Several people remarked to me that they felt
unusually comfortable speaking to him and listening to him,
much unlike the feeling they get when they visit religious
institutions in India.
By far the highlight for us was Swami's leadership of our
goshti in recitation of nityAnusandhAnam and kOyil tiruvAymozhi
on the occasion of periyAzhvAr's tirunakshatram. Swami would
recite the first half of each pAsuram, and we
would recite the second half. Most of you probably
haven't heard Swami's voice, so I would like to describe
it briefly. It is very sweet and musical-sounding, so much so
that each word he recites seems to float out of his mouth.
Such a voice is ideally suited for solo recitation of
slokas and pAsurams. Furthermore, his intonation is extremely
clear and succinct, and as we saw him, it was clear that he was
saying each line with each line with great understanding and
Needless to say, it was a treat to the ears and eyes. His
recitation of 'muniyE, nAnmukane' (last padikam of
as well as the sARRu pAsurams (iruppiDam, etc.) of irAmAnusa
nURRandAdi were particularly memorable. Due to Swami's
our goshti recited the pAsurams remarkably well that day, with
Sri Gunaseelan, Sri Sudarsan, Sri T.K. Rengarajan and others
leading our goshti. Our only wish was that Swami could have
led our goshti in more such prabandha anusandhAnam.
At the conclusion, after vaazhi tirunAmam for Sri MaamunigaL,
Sri Swami glanced at the goshti and asked us to recite
Sri Desika's vaazhi tirunAmam as well, to the pleasant
surprise of our goshti. But perhaps we should not have been
surprised, as Sri Swami is well-known for his large-heartedness
and catholicity of outlook, which far transcend small
differences in traditions.
Sri Raghu Mudumbai personally introduced aDiyEn (me) to Swami
and mentioned our Bhakti List. Swami said that he had heard of
group from several people and encouraged all of us to continue
All in all, we were blessed to have Swami's mangaLASasanams and
we are eagerly anticipating his next visit to our area.

Sri Asmadgurubyonamaha (Sri Swamiji): Dear friend Pattangi, I refer to firstname.lastname@example.org and feel that I should add some more to what he has replied for. AtMessage 1 of 4 , Jul 19, 2000View SourceSri Asmadgurubyonamaha (Sri Swamiji):
Dear friend Pattangi,
I refer to ramnivas@... and feel that I should add some more to what
he has replied for.
At the outset I strongly agree for his feelings in his reply.
There are en-numarous studies conducted by many scientists world wide and
declared that even plants have life, feelings, sorrows and many behavioural
aspects like any living being. After a plant is plucked from the ground,
scientists have shown it how clearly a plant tends to die. Its also a kind
of killing some living being and we living on it.
I feel why different people have different habits are purely how they are
brought up. It also depends upon the body conditions and harmone structure.
I am ardent lover of non-vegitarien, but now I feel of not taking it as by
body is rejecting it.
May be our ancesters have found out that the qualities of the animal we eat
may be inherited by our body which could not be acceptable to the harmony of
the living being.
Doctors have shown that children with calcium deficency have tendency to
lick the wall(In India), because these lime coated walls. So, same could be
the reason too. Our body requires certain amount of fat, which we find it in
abundance in animals. NV pepople directly consume the meat(which contains
certain amount of fat) and all vegetarians consume Ghee which is a direct
source of the same fat maybe(maynot be) from the same sect of animal family.
US scientists have found out that even eating too much of fat free food is
dangerous to health. They have given the same example too. I happen to
notice that many vegetarians have great love for milk products/Fat content
I will dicuss this more in detail later.

Dear Bhagavatas: I bring this topic up as it is a practical issue in our day to day life. I did NOT say that Vegetarianism == No suffering. VegetarianismMessage 1 of 4 , Jul 21, 2000View SourceDear Bhagavatas:
I bring this topic up as it is a practical issue in our day to day
I did "NOT" say that Vegetarianism ==> No suffering.
Vegetarianism ==> No diseases.
Vegetarianism ==> Perfect health.
I did say it will reduce suffereing, diseases & lead to better health.
I am sure most of our spiritual teaching will lead to similar
conclusion. I just do not have any references off hand.
If any "learned" member fron the list could please quote from our
scriptures (with references) it would be nice.
Also someone mentioned a translation of Kokaraokoo
(that would be helpful)
--- In reference to Note from Laxminivas Reddy---:
--- Laxminivas Note forwarded-----
a) Instead of exposing knowledge in form the messages, rather we
time in executing them.
b) Let us practice the teachings of spiritualism under the
leadership of H H Sri Swamiji.
c) We should work with unity for the benefit of human race.
--- End Note forwarded-----
This points sound very good. I have booked my tickets to Visit HH
Jeeyar swamiji in Atlanta. We could discuss the above points.

Repeating my original Note for Clarity:
If there are other significant reasons (especially to appeal to the
youths of today in the US) please add to this list, with Quotes from
our Scriptures/Vedas/Puranas etc.
I am sure we have had others ask us at some point "WHY ARE YOU A
Before I start on why I am a vegetarian, i want to emphasize that I
not judge non-vegetarians.
Everyone makes different choices for various reasons, it is not my
place to Judge.
A great deal of medical evidence points that a diet centered around
animal products is bad for you.
They cause heart disease, exacerbate cancer, obesity, impotence,
I love other creatures and animals and do not want to cause suffering
A vegetarian diet causes "significantly less" suffering to others.
Animals are sentient creatures with their own free will, it seems very
wrong to force our will on others just because we are able to.
A vegetarian diet is materially very efficient than any animal based
In a non vegetarian diet: You are feeding the animal some vegetarian
food and then killing that animal. It is much more efficient to use
the original grain/vegetarian food straight for humans.
