This is probably not practical for the average basement, but something
to consider: The Cherry Valley Model RR Club, in New Jersey, also in a
large basement, has a "walkunder." The floor ramps down a foot or so,
crosses under a few feet of benchwork, and ramps up the other side,
allowing full headroom.

Maybe the answer is, As long as the gate is upside down? As in the top
of a dutch door... People tend to be doctrinaire about duckunders, but
you really need it to make any sense out of your space, ..........
