Well, I think that if new ager J.Z. Knight were transplanted back in time to a Renaissance
village, and I'm going to steer this conversation in that direction, that people of that time
wouldn't like it. AT ALL. I'm always surprised at how many new age gee-gaws and crystal
jewelry are being sold at Ren. Faires. Unless I'm mistaken, stuff like that would be
considered accouterments of witchcraft, which people were extremely frightened of.
There was a movement called alchemy, which my character is a devotee of, that was
fashionable. Every Elizabethan court had an alchemist. But looking at the history of this
movement, it is clear that they were walking a very dangerous line of blasphemy.
I'm sure others are more knowledgeable about this, but there was a gentleman named Dr.
John Dee, who was a mystic, and claimed to be able to contact angels and spirits. There is
even an alphabet called Enochian that I believe he developed. I believe he was under the
employ of Elizabeth Ist. Which is astonishing, because his viewpoints are clearly
blasphemy in that world view.
