I am curious as to where everyone has gone; maybe Facebook as was suggested.
Yahoo Groups has not changed much over the years. Many people are using Meetup.com instead for finding hikes and hikers. Meetup has changed hiking in Ohio. Go to Meetup.com and search for a hiking group in your area. There are some pretty active hiking and backpacking groups.
There is a big difference between how this group and Meetup groups are run. With this group things usually start out with an email from someone saying "who wants to go where and when?". Then there is a volley of emails of ideas, dates and possible routes. The plan stays in limbo for a long time. With Meetup the when and where is decided ahead of time and sent out to the members. If you like the hike that is planned then you sign up. If you don't like it then you don't sign up. With Meetup it is easy to tell who is going on a trip and who isn't. With this group you have to monitor a flurry of emails from people saying yes, no or maybe. With Meetup all the hike details are posted in one place.
There is a lot more email chatter about hiking and hiking related things with this this group. On hiking Meetup sites there is less chatter and more hiking going on.
In all fairness I have not been on a hike with this group. I signed up once to go on a backpacking trip in West Virginia. I had a hard time getting details from the hike leader so I pulled out and opted for a Meetup hike elsewhere. The West Virginia trip ended up being cancelled at the last minute. I am glad I made the switch otherwise I would have missed out on a beautiful October weekend to be outside.
I have met some really nice people on this site and made great contacts. This came in very handy on my recent thru hike of the Buckeye Trail.
