I own two sets...one set for the boat, serious, hardcore, keep you dry no matter what type of gear necessary for life on the west coast of Canada. The other set is lightweight, breathable, easy to pack for day hiking, biking, random wandering. The boat gear lives on the boat, the hiking gear lives in my daypack so no matter what I do the right gear is near at hand.
A note on the boat gear. I often find that I wear just the bottoms when the seat is wet and the wind is up but it's not raining. Get the kind that you can pull on and off over rubber boots without taking the boots off, zips up to the knee really make life better.
Happy Trails, Kirk
ps Spring is here and the boat has been wet (saltwater not rain) several time in the last month. Boy...do I love my new trailer!!!!

can't hike uphill and later sail in the same kit! To hike uphill with
rucsac (and weighing 230lb, like I do at the mo.) you need a jacket
that is light and breathable (and perhaps not totally waterproof in
summer as it will dry quickly; winter is another matter) and you
perhaps don't need a breathable jacket in a dinghy as you don't sweat
a lot as there are no 'coffee grinders' to wind, though to be totally
waterproof is essential.
It looks like I need a new 3-season hiking jacket as I am hopefully
walking the Cuillin in September and can use my Helly Hensen, padded,
breathable skiing jacket for 'walking' (slithering really) Snowdonia
next January. It looks like I will have to 'make do' with my PVC coat
and leggings for the forthcoming trip to Orkney, bought for £5 at the
loacal boat jumble, which is a bit of a downer as I really wanted to
swank around in one of those terrific-looking Musto jackets! This is
what logic says...!
