Tour the Starkweather Conservancy
with retired Parks Dept superintendent Si Widstrand
Saturday April 14 at 9 AM.
Meet in the parking lot at the Marsh View Bike Path (361
Blettner Blvd. - north of the Main Post Office).
This property was formerly known as the Blettner family property. It
is between Hwy 30 and Milwaukee St, north and east of the Voit property, northwest of Metro East Transfer Station. It contains
a mature oak island on what appears to be a gravel morainal
structure surrounded by wetland, remnant sedge meadow, desiccated
wetlands, channelized stormwater flow from approximately 750 upland
acres, a new bike trail and bridge, springs and seeps, and several
stormwater ponds with associated wetlands. It has been home to nesting
sandhill crane for several years, red fox in adjacent
upland slopes, and numerous other species.
It offers a wonderful opportunity for restoration and enhancement by volunteers... welcoming your suggestions and contributions.
