As you near the top of the test plate it increases in heat (heat rises), and you're welding away from your workpiece connection so you have an increased chance of magnetic arc blow. There are several things that might help here is a list:1. Change the work piece connection (sometimes called incorrectly a ground) site, to the end that you are traveling towards.2. Try adding an additional workpiece connection at the top.3. Keep a close arc and work it side to side a little. The last 1/4" and well off the plate continue to weave it a bit more.4. Lower amps by 5 amps.5. Just change to 1/8" electrode, it may take a few more passes but you will have better controll. Try the 1/8" at no more than 115 amps.Good luck on that test.parkerwelds

Subject: [welding_group] Welding test help !!!
I'm taking a welding test in a month and I'm still having a hard time with my vertical.
It's 1 inch plate with a 45 deg. V groove and a backing plate approx, 1 inch by 1/4 inch.
The root opening is 1/4 inch. The plates are 5 inches long.
We're using 7018, and have the choice of 1/8 or 5/32 dia.
I'm opting for the 5/32
My amperage is around 125 - 130 A .
My root pass is fine and so are the next two or three layers of beads.
The best way to describe my travel speed is that when I'm done with a pass
there's about 3-4 inches or rod left.
Mind you after about 5or6 passes I let the plate cool off for ten minutes.
Heres my problem. I'm welding just fine and then I get about 1 inch from the top of the
plate and all hell breaks loose. It seems as though I'm burning right through the plate.
The arc starts blowing out of control, stuff starts dripping everywhere, and when I pull the rod out, there's a big gaping hole there that goes almost to the backing plate.
It's happened a number of times.
I'm paying attention to what I'm doing, everything is going fine, and then Wammo ! WTF !
I would appreciate any help with this.
